Guest Post by T.C. Southwell – Creating Original Fantasy Creatures

As part of her blog tour, I’m hosting fantasy author T.C. Southwell on my blog today! She’s going to be talking about creating original fantasy creatures in writing, so stay with us.
Also, don’t miss the chance to get one of her books for free! Read more about the offer at the end of the post. For now, I will leave the word to ms. Southwell!

T.C. Southwell AuthorOriginality is something every author should strive for. Using the hackneyed, stereotypical creatures that have been around for centuries – unicorns, vampires, fairies, elves, dragons and ogres, etc. – detracts from a good fantasy tale, in my opinion. Sure, it’s easier to write about something everyone knows, so you don’t have to describe it in detail, but for readers, discovering new and exciting fantasy creatures enhances a story. While the tried and trusted has a fan following all of its own, it’s so much better to make the effort to be original, not only in your storyline, but also the creatures that populate your world.

Creating an original fantasy creature is a lot of fun! Imagine it before you invent it, and ensure you cover all your bases. Where does it live? What does it eat? How does it reproduce? How intelligent is it? Can it speak? Does it have its own language? Does it wear clothing? Learning all of those things is exciting for your readers. Don’t imagine that, just because some of those aspects aren’t directly relevant to your story, they’re not fascinating. Certainly, you can add originality to an existing mythical creature, but you’re still restricting yourself. Let your imagination go wild when thinking up something new and exciting, but try to also make it believable. Some fantasy may rely heavily on magic, but explaining away the unbelievable with ‘it’s magic’ can also become rather hackneyed. A magical creature that makes sense is more interesting.

Even better, perhaps, is a fantasy creature that isn’t magical. To help your readers to imagine it, draw parallels to whatever mundane or mythical creature it most resembles, if any. A bit of backstory on how it came to be, or what happened to this species in the past, will help to flesh out its overall nature. If it needs to fulfil a particular purpose in your story, create it with this in mind, but don’t tailor-make it, or it will be obvious that it only exists to fulfil the purpose you’ve assigned to it. If you really want to intrigue your readers, you can make it mysterious, and describe only certain facets of it, whilst leaving the rest up to their imaginations. Have your characters discuss or think about legends of it, perhaps, and, when it appears, allow only fleeting glimpses. This can be more titillating than describing it in detail, but both options offer a wealth of creative freedom. In fact, it’s limitless!

As a special blog tour promotion, T. C. Southwell’s book The Queen’s Blade II, Sacrifice is free during 6. – 8. August! Be sure to pick up a copy and remember that the first book in the series, The Queen’s Blade, is permanently free.

Character Series – Ashe

Priestess Ashe

I’m going to be starting a series of posts, each one focusing on one of my major characters! It will include various information as well as artwork of the character. If you have any ideas for something that should be included, write it in the comments and I will be sure to add it if I can.

The character artwork in these posts are made by Emily B. aka ViceralSiren.

Priestess Ashe

Info

Name: Ashe
Age: 24
Height: 5’6”(168cm)
Eye color: Blue
Hair color: Blonde
Special traits: None
Ability: Healing
Ethnicity: Sinarian
Affiliation: Temple of Arnath(Clergy)
Occupation: Priestess

Backstory
Ashe arrived at the temple of Arnath as a young girl in order to study to become a priestess. After becoming a priestess, she devoted her life to the service of Arnath.

Personality
Ashe is a very gentle and compassionate person, which is why she has chosen to serve the archangel of healing.
She is friendly and polite to everyone and has a lot of respect for her superiors.

Abilities
Because of being a priestess of Arnath, she has the ability to use healing magic.

Relationships

Selissa
Ashe respects Selissa for offering her help to the temple of Arnath and for being the host of Cadeyrn. They become quick friends and Ashe often attempts to make Selissa loosen up and enjoy herself.

Seymour
Ashe is one of the few people at the temple who doesn’t treat Seymour differently for being a Nephilim and because of that he is friendlier towards her. Despite not being close, they like and respect each other.

First appearance: Silent Sound – Chapter 4

“Excuse me…” A soft voice said behind her. She turned around to see a young woman, dressed in priest robes. “Are you Lady Selissa?”
Lady? She thought disbelieving. What had the High Priest told them about her?
“Just Selissa, please.” She told the priestess. The other woman smiled and bowed her head to her.
“I’m Ashe. I was told to greet you and make sure you got settled in.” She said, a soft smile on her face. Selissa couldn’t help but immediately like her. Her honestly kind smile reminded her of Calen.
She was slender and only slightly shorter than herself. Her features were as soft as her smile, framed by wavy blonde hair, giving her a dainty beauty. Her eyes were an icy blue that would have seemed cold on anyone else, but here only managed to add to the soft image.
“That’s very kind of you, Ashe.” Selissa said and couldn’t help returning the smile. Ashe’s smile widened in return and her eyes twinkled in the waning evening light.
“It’s my pleasure.” She said and seemed to mean it. “Let me show you the way to your room.”

Quiet Whisper – Chapter 1

Don’t worry, I haven’t completely forgotten about the next book in the Angel’s Voice series. I have been a little preoccupied with finishing Demon’s Dance, but I have started on Quiet Whisper and here’s the proof.

I’m not entirely happy with the first chapter and it might be rewritten many, many times, but enjoy this first draft!

Quiet Whisper – Chapter 1

She really should be wondering what he was doing there. She hadn’t seen him for months, but somehow he managed to show up in the exact same town she was currently staying in.
He was watching her intently from the other side of the street. He was sitting atop of a brick wall, elbows rested against his knees and his chin placed in his palm. Selissa could feel his eyes boring into her, and she pointedly ignored him.
A map was laid out in her lap and she tried to focus all her attention on it, in the vain hope that he would go away if she pretended not to see him. It quickly turned out to be a lost cause.
With a frustrated sigh, she folded the map and crammed it into her duffel bag. Gritting her teeth, she carefully kept her eyes lowered so he wouldn’t get the satisfaction of seeing her seething.
“I just finished another job…” She said loud enough to be heard on the other side of the street. “Is a bit of peace and quiet really too much to ask for?”
She heard the sound of boots hitting the ground and she lifted her eyes to glare at the man who insisted on making her life a waking nightmare.
“Peace and quiet would drive you insane.” Ardeth said as he approached her, voice deep and familiar. “If that was what you wanted, you would have gone back to the temple a long time ago.”
He really was infuriating when he was right. Selissa huffed and glared at the assassin, even though she knew she had lost the argument before it began.
As he had closed the distance between them, she was now able to get a good look at him. He had not changed the least bit since she had last run into to him in some shady tavern far out in the country, but somehow he always managed to look different to her every time she saw him.
She decided it had to be the strangely tasteful clothes he was dressed in. He was wearing a dark gray traveling cloak over a dark green vest and faded black trousers. They showed no trace of rips or other signs of battle, which in itself was very odd. His long, black hair was tied back in a low ponytail with a green ribbon that matched the vest.
To top it all off, the left side of his face was covered with black leather mask. Selissa knew all too well what lay beneath the mask, but Ardeth rarely bothered to cover up the mark tattooed on his left cheek. Something was definitely off.
She decided to completely disregard his previous comment as she looked at him critically.
“Should I be disturbed by how… decent you look?” She asked hesitantly.
Ardeth grinned, the predatory glint in his eyes standing in sharp contrast to his appearance. “You’re not the only one who just got off duty.”
Selissa lifted an eyebrow. As far as she knew, Ardeth’s ‘duty’ involved slashing some poor bastard’s throat and then delivering the body on a silver platter. Hardly stuff you needed to dress up for.
“Some people prefer to take a less direct approach…” He explained when he saw her skeptical look. “Though personally, I never understood the point of blackmail when you can rid yourself of the problem a far easier way.”
She suddenly realized what he meant. “Never took you for a spy… You don’t strike me as someone good at blending in.”
“That’s because I never bothered trying.” He said simply.
There wasn’t really any arguing with that. Ardeth had never cared what anyone else thought and he wasn’t about to start now. That he even accepted a job that involved a fair deal of deception was a surprise. Selissa cringed at the picture of Ardeth acting civil to fool some unknowing victim into trusting him. It just didn’t sit right with her.
“And it’s a complete coincidence that our paths just happened to cross?” She asked lightly.
“Complete coincidence.” Ardeth agreed casually. For some reason, Selissa wasn’t convinced.
“I’m not going to get dragged into some crazy scheme, am I?” She asked exasparated. Things tended to go downhill every time she ran into the assassin.
“Not because of me…” He said, but he was looking at something behind her. Leaning forward, he spoke softly into her ear. “But maybe because of the red-head who’s been watching you for some time now.”
Selissa swung around to follow his eyes, but she saw nothing besides the various merchants and people in the street. “What are you talking about?”
“A girl…” Ardeth said as his eyes returned to her. “She’s been watching you ever since you came to talk to me. She disappeared the moment you turned around.”
Selissa kept looking uncertainly over her shoulder, but whoever Ardeth had seen was long gone now. She had not noticed anyone watching her, but she didn’t doubt him for a second. The only problem was that she had no idea why anyone would be watching her.
She shook her head, refusing to let herself become paranoid just because someone had been staring at her. It wouldn’t be the first time.
“It’s probably nothing…” She said, more to herself than to Ardeth.

She hadn’t really had high hopes that Ardeth would leave her to herself, but Selissa still found herself getting annoyed when he followed her like a loyal, albeit very dangerous, dog when she prepared to leave the town.
“Do you really not have anything better to do?” She asked as he stalked a few feet behind her as she made her way towards the gates. The town they were staying in was located in the far east of the ‘Bla’ province, not far from the border between Sinaria and Ver’dohna, and the presence of military was prominent. It was mostly populated by war refugees, and Selissa was highly aware of how they stuck out in the crowd. She could feel eyes lingering on them as they passed one of the town guards.
“Not really, no.” Ardeth said calmly. He didn’t seem all that bothered by the suspicious looks sent his way.
“Following me won’t be much fun.” Selissa said, even though she knew he wouldn’t listen to her. “I’m not even sure where I’m going.”
“Let’s find out, then.” He said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Selissa stopped abruptly. She placed her duffel bag and her sword sheaths on the ground and turned to look at the assassin with her arms crossed over her chest.
“No…” She said slowly, as if she was talking to a child. “I’ll find out where I’m going next. Alone.”
Ardeth smiled and bent down to look her in the eyes. “How are you going to stop me?”
Before she could reply, he leaned closer and whispered in her ear. “And just so you know, that girl is still watching you.”
Startled, Selissa looked over his shoulder and saw a flash of red disappear around a corner. For a moment, she considered shouting out to the person, but she could still feel the eyes of the town guards linger on her and it was better not to draw any more attention to herself.
“How did you even notice her?” Selissa asked as Ardeth drew back from her. As far as she knew, he would have had his back turned at all times and couldn’t possibly have seen the girl by accident.
“If I didn’t notice such things, I would have been dead long ago.” He said casually.
He had a point. Not to mention that if he didn’t notice, she would be long gone as well. Selissa didn’t even remember how many times he had saved her when she was about to be stabbed in the back.
Selissa took one last look at where the girl had disappeared, weighting her options. She didn’t know if the girl was a threat, but even if she was, Selissa doubted she was in any danger as long as Ardeth followed her like a shadow. And she wasn’t eager to stay in the town any longer than she had to. Not while wary eyes still followed every step she took.
“I’m leaving.” Selissa said to Ardeth, before turning on her heels and continuing towards the gates. “Do as you like.”
She knew he would follow, and she wasn’t disappointed. He would have been a poor shadow if he had let her get away.
“You’re not going to anything about it?” He asked.
Selissa shook her head, but kept walking. “I’m not going to go look for trouble. Not today. If anyone wants something from me, they can come and say it to my face.”
“Then I guess I will do that.” The voice calling out to her made Selissa stop dead in her tracks, and she slowly turned around.
A young girl walked towards her, only sparing Ardeth a wary glance as she passed him. She had to be around fifteen, the faint traces of childhood just barely visible in her face, and Selissa couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something familiar about her.
Her red hair danced around her face as she came to a stop before Selissa. A strained smile graced the younger girl’s lips as green eyes met silver.
“It’s been a long time.” She said.
Selissa stood unmoving, still convinced that she had met the girl before, but unable to recall where. Slowly, the girl led a hand to her hair and swept a flaming red lock behind her ear, revealing her left cheek and along with that, an all too familiar tattoo. A tattoo nearly identical to the one carried by the assassin by Selissa’s side. Finally, the pieces fell into place, and Selissa remembered exactly who the girl in front of her was.
“Nadia?”

Character Series – Calen

Calen character artwork

I’m going to be starting a series of posts, each one focusing on one of my major characters! It will include various information as well as artwork of the character. If you have any ideas for something that should be included, write it in the comments and I will be sure to add it if I can.

Calen

Info

Name: Calen
Age: 22
Height: 5’10”(178cm)
Eye color: Blue
Hair color: Blond
Special traits: None
Ability: None
Ethnicity: Sinarian
Affiliation: Temple of Issara(Clergy)
Occupation: Priest

Backstory
Calen grew up in the temple of Issara, studying to become a priest. While he was an apprentice he was with the people that found Selissa battered and bruised outside the temple grounds and he spent his time looking out for her.

Calen is kind to everyone and rarely gets angry. He likes helping others and never judges someone unfairly.
He is very devoted to his duties as a priest, but always take the time to talk to the people living at the temple.

Abilities
Calen is an average man with no special abilities.

Relationships

Selissa
Calen was Selissa’s only friend while they were growing up and they trust each other more than anyone else at the temple. Calen is very protective of Selissa, but doesn’t try to persuade her to stay in protection at the temple as he knows it wouldn’t change her mind.

First appearance: Resounding Echo – Chapter 1

She was so lost in her thoughts that she almost missed the sound of footsteps. Her head snapped up when she noticed the sound and scanned the garden for the intruder.
A young man, dressed in priest robes, stepped into the garden and walked towards her. She relaxed immediately when she recognized him.
Calen had been an apprentice at the temple when Selissa first came there. He was one of the people who had found her lying battered and bruised outside the sanctuary grounds all those years ago, when she was taken in by the temple’s priests.
Even though he had long since passed his exams and had become a priest, to her he was still the same as back then. The years hadn’t changed his boyish, but kind face much and he still had the same shaggy, blond hair that gave him a permanent disheveled look.
“Skipping Mass again?” He asked, as he approached her. There was no accusation in his voice, and the smile on his face told her that he was more amused by her actions than disapproving.
Some of the tension disappeared from her shoulders. Calen was the closest thing she had to a friend and being around him always made her feel at ease. “I’m not skipping. I’m just not attending.” Selissa answered promptly, before realizing how stupid it sounded. Calen’s smile widened and he let out a chuckle.

First appearance:  Resounding Echo – Chapter 2/Quiet Whisper – Chapter 1 (Major role)

She watched as the people approached, most of them shooting wary looks around them.  By now, paranoia was so deeply settled in them that it would probably follow them for the rest of their lives.
A young girl stumbled on the road and fell to her knees. The hood on her ragged cape fell from her face and long, bright red hair spilled out from it. But it wasn’t her hair that caught Selissa’s attention.
On the girl’s face, right under her left eye, a black mark was tattooed. Even though it was the first time she had ever seen someone with such a tattoo, she recognized it immediately.
The Mark of the Cursed… She had once seen a picture of it in one of the library’s books, but never thought she would meet someone who was Marked themselves.
The Mark of the Cursed got tattooed on people who were influenced by demonic magic. They were considered outcasts and were often hunted down when people saw the symbol on their cheek.
A boy, probably a few years older than the girl, helped her to her feet. Selissa noticed that many of the temple’s residents who were passing by were staring and whispering among themselves. The red-haired girl lowered her head and tried to look as small as possible. The boy kept his hand on her shoulder and glared at the nearby people, who were suddenly in a hurry to get to their destinations.
