The Bookish Owl – Before the Storm by Christie Golden

Warcraft Before the Storm Christie Golden Owl

I’m getting a lot more reading done ever since I started doing these posts. If only owl photos could improve my writing speed as well!

Next up on my reading list is Before the Storm by Christie Golden. It’s a media tie-in for World of Warcraft and I’m waaay behind on my WoW lore these days. I need to up my game if I want to stay the undisputed champion of World of Warcraft Trivial Pursuit (yes, that’s a thing and I’m embarassingly good at it).

This book deals with the conflict that sparks the story in the latest expansion to the game, Battle for Azeroth, and seeing as the expansion has been out since last summer, it’s probably about time I figure out what’s going on.

Artemis clearly doesn’t understand what’s going on, but he’s looking suitably fierce in the photo (mostly because he doesn’t understand why I kept putting back the book he kept knocking over…)

Odense Geek Gathering

Virtual Reality VR Cosplay

I went to a small convention this Saturday – for once neither volunteering nor selling books. These days it’s always weird for me to go to one of these events and not be busy as hell, but it’s also sort of nice having time to do things like eat lunch and breathe. However, I did still spent all of Sunday moaning in pain, because 14 hours on my feet, 7 of those spent in a cosplay with spiky pauldrons, a heavy helmet and ridiculously high-heeled boots, was more than my horribly out of shape body could handle.

Now it’s Monday and I can still barely sit down on a chair without going into a symphony of “Ow, ow, ow, ow”, but I did finally manage to lift my arms enough to write this.

The convention in question was Odense Geek Gathering – a newly started one-day convention (funnily enough located in the Danish city of Odense). As I said, it was a small affair, but while that might not be ideal for sellling books, it’s quite convenient for running around with spiky dragons on your shoulders!

I spent the day cosplaying with my friend Line – her as Empoleon from Pokémon, me in my Dragonstalker armor from World of Warcraft, so the only thing we had in common was that we both looked like weird caped superheroes.

We had a good time, walking around the convention (with Line in front, shuffling around in her penguin feet and clearing a path for me so I wouldn’t accidentally stab anyone), playing board games (where I was told I was being shady with all my chickens), watching geek-themed stand-up, and shooting a lot of guys with VR.

That shit’s terrifying, by the way. Every time I turned around, there would be some guy behind me with a steel pipe. Remind me never to try a horror game.

In the evening, we went out to get some food, and let me tell you: If two people go to McDonalds wearing capes… nobody will dare comment on it.

Oh, and for the third time my Dragonstalker cosplay ended up on the local news. Rather impressive, seeing as I have only ever worn it four times.
Journalists love dragons.

A Newbie Demon Hunter’s Search For Pants in Diablo III

Diablo III Act 1

So, last week I finally got around to playing Diablo III.
Not sure what took me so long. You would think a game where you get to run around in a dark forest and shoot demons in the face with a crossbow would be right up my alley, right?

Anyway, so I made a Demon Hunter and spent the first 30 minutes running around… pretty much ignoring my quest and instead desperately searching for a pair of pants for my poor character.

Seriously, you start out with a crossbow and stiletto-heel boots (that is NOT forest-suited footwear), but there wasn’t any money left to buy the poor gal some pants?

Demon Hunter Level 1

In the end, I took a pair of pants of a dead soldier in a basement. After I shot all the zombies gnawing on him. Magically, they fit me perfectly (and did not have a trace of zombie guts on them)!

I still would have liked a jacket, but I feel like I was just being demanding at that point.

After getting my pants, and shooting a bunch more zombies with arrows I’m not sure where I was keeping, I was off to save an old man. Luckily, as someone who has watched way too many BlizzCon livestreams over the years, and played way too much Heroes of the Storm, I knew this dude and was fairly sure he wouldn’t be zombified by the time I got to him.

But I was also fairly sure that if he went all “Stay a while and listen”, I might just shoot him in the face for the hell of it.

Perhaps luckily for him, I didn’t find the old coot before it was time for bed (real life bosses do not accept “monster hunting” as an excuse for why you didn’t get enough sleep to do your day job). I did, however, find more zombies. Soooo many zombies. And bats. And more zombies.

You get the point.

Long story short, I got my pants and I’m getting way too fond of this crossbow. Pretty much the only thing keeping me from shooting everyone in the face, friend or enemy, is because the game won’t allow me to.

Cosplay Post – Dragonstalker Hunter (World of Warcraft)

Dragonstalker Hunter cosplay WoW

Bookish, non-geeky people: You have my permission to leave. We’re going full geek now and I know some of you have mistakenly made your way here, looking for some deep insight on writing.
You were deceived.

On to the geekiness!

I decided I wanted to make a post about my Dragonstalker cosplay. No real reason, except to keep this blog alive and as an excuse to post pictures of me looking pretty enough to distract from the fact that I’m wearing a dragon as a hat. In public. Like an idiot.

Might just do one of these posts for each of my cosplays (if I get around to it).
