Hail Hydra! – HydraCon 2015

Alliance postsign WarcraftHorde postsign Warcraft

I’m home from yet another convention and even though I for once didn’t attend as an author, you’re going to get a post about it anyway!

Mostly because I got some pretty pictures taken.

I have mentioned HydraCon briefly before. It’s a new Danish gaming and comic convention that opened its doors for the first time this weekend.  We can all be honest and say it’s been having some start-up problems, resulting in it being a very small convention this year, but hopefully it will improve next year.

But it’s not all bad. It has never been so easy to find an empty changing room or getting through the line in the cafeteria.

I didn’t attend Artist Alley at this convention, so what did I do instead? Well, I banded together with a group of my geekiest friends (and that’s saying a lot) and hosted HydraCon’s Warcraft Corner.

It should come as no surprise to anyone following this blog that I’m into cosplay, gaming cosplay in particular. So are many of my friends and quite a few of my friends are also to be found among the Danish convention organizers, so we were able to get our very own space at HydraCon to display our various props and costumes.

It couldn’t have been better timing either, as the new expansion for World of Warcraft was announced at Gamescom the day before. Several attempts at going to bed were foiled by sudden, passionate discussions about lore or new class mechanics.

I faintly remember launching into a tirade about warlocks Saturday night…

I did cheat a bit on my fellow Warcrafters (the name was totally Steffan’s, our resident Lich King/Medivh, idea) though. Friday I participated in the Cosplay Showcase contest with my Morrigan (Dragon Age) cosplay. I won the Best Look-Alike category, while my fellow Warcrafter Lisa (Namalyn Cosplay) blew everyone else out of the water and won Best Craftmanship with her amazing female Deathwing cosplay!

Another thing that was both good and bad about the small number of convention guests was that all the photographers had plenty of time. Normally they only have time to snap a couple pictures of each cosplayer, if they even have time for you at all, while at HydraCon, you were basically kidnapped before you were done putting on your costume and then photographed from every possible angle.

Which is awesome, but at some point you just want to lie down and cry from exhaustion!

Also, outdoor photos are nice and all for male characters, but female game character were not designed for the Danish weather… Luckily, Medivh didn’t mind sharing his cloak.

Now I intend to melt into my couch and not move at all for about a week. I’m also going to pretend I don’t have a book deadline before Koyocon in November, while I wait for photographers to upload some pictures of this weekend’s craziness.

Photoshoot – Alexstrasza and Ysera

Maybe I should just make this webpage into a cosplay page instead. I have absolutely nothing to say about writing lately! On the other hand, I have pictures of costumes! The two things are totally related… well, at least I keep within the fantasy genre.

The last pictures I posted were solely of my friend Skymone’s Jaina Proudmoore costume. This time around, we hijacked a photographer to take pictures of our dragon costumes, so I’m actually featured!

The characters are Ysera the Awakened (Skymone) and Alexstrasza the Life-binder (Me) from World of Warcraft. We worked together on these costumes for about a year. It was the first cosplay I did, so I had to lean heavily on Skymone’s crafting experience, but I think it turned out really well! If you’re interested in the process, go take a look at Skymone’s Facebook page: Skymone Cosplay

Two Girls and an Owl

Owl Harry Potter

This Saturday brought along a lot of geekery. My costume-obsessed friend Simone had two Harry Potter-themed costumes lying around and I had an owl… Only logical conclusion was going to the park near Marselisborg(the Danish queen’s castle in Aarhus) and do a photoshoot!

Simone dressed up as Luna Lovegood, I as Hermione Granger, and my owl Artemis played the role of our mentally challenged post owl(you will understand later).

All pictures are taken by me or Skymone Cosplay.

I love Simone’s dreamy expression in this one. Totally Luna!

Genki, Night Elves and Defenestration

Genki Artist Alley

It’s Sunday and Genki has come and gone. I’m dead tired, but as usual I had a great time participating in Artist Alley, even if my friends managed to get me covered in super glue. Again. Seriously, guys!

I’ve been to quite a few of these conventions by now, three times as an author promoting my books, and I have got to know a lot of new people, so I met many familiar faces and made even more friends this time around. I was there with my friends Simone and Nina, both of whom are way better at promoting me than I am. Simone is the born saleswoman and if you don’t believe me, take a look at the post I’ll be putting up later.

Apparently, everybody is better at selling books than I am… Earlier today, a random guy came around my table and started promoting my books to passerbys. His only request was that I threw someone out a window in my next book. How could I say no?

Since it was a J-Pop convention, there was a lot of focus on costumes as well. Simone is a great cosplayer (see her Facebook page Skymone Cosplay) and she was wearing her Night Elf(World of Warcraft) costume during Saturday. However, she had some technical difficulties and apparently, my table was the best place to fix various broken armour items. Hence the super glue episode…

She looked great, though, and people was falling over themselves to take pictures of her. Check out the picture post to see some of the great shots!

All in all, I had a great weekend and even though I long to relax, I can’t really wait to sort through some of the pictures so I can post them here!

If you were at Genki, please throw me a comment on this post! Did you come and chat with me or do you have a funny convention story you want to share? Don’t be shy!

If you were at SVScon and have any great pictures you would like to share, post a link in the comments and I will upload them! I would especially love pictures of you if you came to talk me in Artist Alley or if you have a great one of your costume!
